The House of Representatives has adopted a motion calling for special recognition and awards for outstanding officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The motion, sponsored by Chairman House Committee on Defence, Babajimi Benson, aimed to honour their bravery, professionalism, and dedication to combating insecurity in the country.
The member representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency of Lagos State, Babajimi Benson, emphasized the need to recognize the immense sacrifices made by officers and men of the Armed Forces, often at the risk of their own lives.
He acknowledged the significant victories achieved by the Armed Forces, particularly in the Northeast region, as well as their contributions to regional peace and stability, international peacekeeping missions, and humanitarian efforts.
According to him, the Federal government must sustain its support through increased funding, modern equipment, and enhanced welfare packages to ensure the continuous efficiency and effectiveness of the Armed Forces.
In their contributions, a member from Plateau, Yusuf Gadgi and his counterpart from Kastina State, Sada Soli, commended the Armed Forces for their service, noting that Nigerians owe them a debt of gratitude.
However, a member from Ogun State, Isiaka Ayokunle expressed concern over the delay in providing benefits to families of fallen heroes, while a member from Imo state, Princess Odinaka Onuah advocated a special scholarship scheme for children of members of the Armed Forces who died in the line of duty.
In his ruling, the Deputy Speaker who presided over plenary mandated the House Committees on Security to ensure the implementation of the motion’s recommendations.
