The Federal Fire Service says all vehicles transporting flammable substances must now be equipped with Anti-Spill Locks to prevent fuel spillage during accidents, thereby reducing the risk of explosions and fire outbreaks.
The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Mr. Jaji Abdulganiyu stated this while inaugurating a six-week training course for Chief Superintendents of Fire in Sheda, Abuja.
Mr. Abdulganiyu while emphasizing that fire incidents are largely preventable, stressed the urgent need for fuel tankers to be fitted with essential safety mechanisms to mitigate the dangers associated with fuel transportation.
He revealed that as part of efforts to address tanker explosions he had recently engaged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to explore practical solutions to the recurring challenges in fuel transportation safety.
The Controller General described training and retraining of fire officers as a key initiative under his leadership, aimed at enhancing professionalism, fostering growth, and strengthening the capacity to tackle evolving fire management challenges.
He stated that over 325 fire officers have been trained since the inception of the training programme, one and a half years ago which underscored the agency’s commitment to improving fire safety and emergency response in the country.
