The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has expressed concerns over the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS),
A statement by his Special Assistant Media and Communications Strategy,
warns that the move could have significant repercussions for regional security, economic stability, and integration efforts.
The statement describes the exit as a complex issue requiring careful consideration and diplomatic engagement to address underlying grievances.
It emphasizes that the sanctions imposed on these countries were a collective decision by ECOWAS heads of state and government. noting that President Bola Tinubu has been actively engaging in diplomatic efforts to address their concerns.
“Several delegations have been sent to these countries, and the presidents of Togo and Sierra Leone have been appointed as mediators to facilitate dialogue,” Tuggar states.
“Additionally, ECOWAS has lifted sanctions on these countries, paving the way for potential reconciliation.”
“ECOWAS has established a 1,650-man brigade to combat terrorism and has provided financial assistance to support affected countries,” he stated.
The statement warns that the departure of these nations from ECOWAS could limit their access to regional markets and hinder economic growth.
“The withdrawal may disrupt regional integration efforts, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” he adds.
It notes that the African Union and other international organizations have expressed concerns over the impact on regional stability and cooperation.
It stresses that ECOWAS remains open to dialogue and cooperation with the withdrawing nations.
The statement underscores the importance of diplomacy and regional cooperation in navigating the current situation.
It reiterates President Tinubu’s stance that the door remains open for the AES countries to rejoin ECOWAS, expressing hope that they would seize the opportunity to re-engage with their West African neighbors.
