The West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS) has congratulated the people and government of Ghana on a peaceful and successful political transition.
In a statement, the pro-democracy network describes Ghana as a beacon of hope in West Africa following the inauguration of its 6th president under the Fourth Republic, John Mahama, on January 7, 2025.
The statement lauds the country’s democratic trajectory since its return to civilian rule in 1992 and commended its recent transparent elections and smooth power transfer.
It highlights the regional significance of Ghana’s democratic stability amidst growing concerns over unconstitutional changes of government and human rights violations in other parts of West Africa.
The statement calls on President Mahama, as a member of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, to intervene in the planned withdrawal of the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES) from ECOWAS.
According to the statement the exit, scheduled for January 29, 2025, poses a potential threat to regional integration and peace.
The statement also urges President Mahama to engage with leaders of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali to halt the AES’s withdrawal and uphold the region’s democratic values.
It encourages other West African leaders to emulate Ghana’s commitment to democratic governance reaffirming its dedication in fostering free, fair, and inclusive societies across the region.
The statement wishes President Mahama and the people of Ghana a successful term ahead.
