Presidential Livestock Reform Implementation Committee has engaged stakeholders across Bauchi State with a view to generate adequate information to tackle the long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s livestock sector.
The 25-member committee, co-chaired by Professor Attahiru Jega, aims to find sustainable solutions to issues such as farmer-herder conflicts, seasonal migration, and inefficiencies in livestock production and processing.
At the stakeholders engagement session held at the Banquet Hall of the Bauchi Government House, Professor Jega emphasised that the committee’s primary goal is to achieve food and nutrition security.
Recognising the input of local stakeholders in agriculture and livestock production, he called for innovative approaches to improve processing, increase productivity, and ensure long-term sustainability.
One of the key proposals emerging from the discussions is the constitution of a similar committee and unveiling of organogram for Ministry of Livestock Development in Bauchi State.
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state who announced the initiative, described it as a critical step in addressing the sector’s long-term neglect.
He stated that the proposed ministry would align with the federal government’s livestock reform agenda while addressing the root causes of conflicts between farmers and herders.
Governor Mohammed highlighted that the proposed ministry would provide solutions that have the potential of reducing seasonal herder migrations and promote coexistence between farming and pastoral communities.
Stakeholders at the event pointed to promising examples of livestock development initiatives in other regions, showcasing how targeted reforms can transform challenges into opportunities.
