Captain of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, Sarah Ogoke, has announced her retirement from international basketball, bringing to a close over a decade of service with D’Tigress.
The announcement was made in Lyon, France, ahead of her final appearance at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, commended Ogoke’s contributions, noting her impact on national pride and her role in inspiring women and young athletes across the country.
From a policy perspective, her retirement highlights growing attention to athlete welfare, recognition, and post-career support systems under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Officials say efforts are being strengthened to ensure athletes retire with dignity, including national honours and structured incentives.
Ogoke departs as one of Nigeria’s most decorated players, having won five FIBA Women’s Afrobasket titles, leaving behind a legacy that reinforces the need for sustained investment in women’s sports and talent development.
