The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Nigerians planning to visit Australia to remain cautious due to reported cases of discrimination, harassment, and hate crimes.
The advisory follows a rise in antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents in some Australian cities.
According to a statement by the acting spokesperson of the ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa says recent incident in Sydney’s Woollahra suburb saw a car set on fire and anti-Israel graffiti sprayed on nearby buildings.
It explains that the incidents reflects a broader increase in hate crimes tied to international tensions.
“While Australia is known for its multiculturalism, Nigerians are urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions.”
The Ministry encourages Nigerian residents and travelers in Australia to be mindful of social dynamics and prioritize their safety.
It urges anyone facing harassment or discrimination to contact the Nigerian High Commission in Canberra
