The Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council, has distributed over 600 bags of 10kg rice to support its members to celebrate the festive season.
Distributing the food items at its headquarters in Abuja, the Chairman NUJ, FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike said the initiative was a reflection of her oath of allegiance to foster joy, peace and unity among members.
According to Comrade Grace Ike, the distribution is the first batch as efforts are on to roll out the second batch in January, next year.
The Chairman NUJ, FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike while presenting the food items to some members of the NUJ, FCT Council, said the move barely after three weeks of coming into office was a demonstration of her commitment to served members of NUJ FCT Council.
She added that the move was also a demonstration of the Council’s unwavering commitment to be transparent, accountable and to cater for the welfare of its members.
“We are reaching over 600 members based on the last congress register as the criterion for distribution. This approach encourages participation in the union and demonstrates to our members that the union belongs to them.”
The Treasurer of NUJ, FCT Council, Comrade Sandra Udeike said the initiative which was first of its kind, would go a long way to alleviate the economic hardship of journalists.
“This might not be much but it will help alleviate the plight of journalists especially in the FCT and by extension the hardship of Nigerians. The initiative is one of the best so far in the council and this js just the beginning. The Grace Ike led executive will do more to ensure that journalists get the welfare they deserve.”
Some of the beneficiaries, Lois Jonathan of Authority Newspaper expressed excitement that the chairman had kept to her word by fulfilling one of her promises.
For Ebriku John-Friday from the Leader NG said this was the first time he had received this gesture from Council.
The Chapel Chairman for Peoples Dailys, Christiana Ekpa lauded the initiative and encouraged other leaders to emulate her leadership qualities of humility and selflessness.
They further called for a holistic approach towards tackling the hardship being faced by Nigerians in recent times.
