The Federal Government says the nation’s critical surveying infrastructure will be upgraded to enable the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation to provide efficient services for the development of the country.
Minister of State for Works, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Goronyo gave this indication during a familiarisation visit to the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation in Abuja.
Alhaji Goronyo who decried the obsolete surveying infrastructure at the agency said that no modern nation desirous of development play with its mapping and geo-partial data for various applications across different sectors of the economy.
He therefore pledged that the impact of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu will see the decaying surveying equipment at the agency completely overhauled and updated.
Earlier, the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Dr Abdulganiyu Adebomehin while conducting the Minister round the seventeen technical departments of the agency, stated that aside obsolete equipment, underfunding of the agency has been a major challenge hindering effective discharge of its functions.
Dr Adebomehin highlighted some achievements of the agency to include the creation of a national repository saver for geo-partial data for monitoring in cases of emergencies.
He explained that sixty percent of surveying processes has been taken over by the Information Communication Technologies and urged the Federal Government to look into the constraints with the view to addressing them.
The Surveyor-General of the Federation also emphasized the need for a national centralized geo-partial data infrastructure for the country to facilitate accurate and informed decision making and sustainable coordinated development efforts of the different agencies of government.
