As part of efforts to ensure smooth traffic flow at the Onitsha Bridge Head during the Christmas and new year celebrations, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command has requested the assistance of the Police in Anambra State to suspend checkpoints at the Onitsha end of the Old Bridge.
The FRSC, however, wants the Anambra State Police Command to maintain its presence at the Second Niger Bridge axis.
The Sector Commander, FRSC, Anambra State Command, Corps Commander Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, made the request to the Police Commissioner in the State, Mr Nnaghe Obono Itam, during an on-site assessment of both bridges.
In response, the Anambra Commissioner of Police invited his Delta State counterpart, CP, Mr Abaniwonda Olufemi, to join them for an assessment of the two bridges.
As a result of the collaboration, they affirmed that all checkpoints at the Bridge Head will be suspended from December 18, 2024 to January 10, 2025.
All police checkpoints on the Delta State axis of the Old Niger Bridge will also be dismantled to facilitate free flow of traffic during the period.
They also pointed out that there would be establishment of mobile surveillance at the Second Bridge axis and provision of officers for joint traffic control efforts with the FRSC during the yuletide.
The FRSC Anambra State boss, further stated the command’s commitments to ensuring the safety of all road users during the festive period.
Corps Commander Joyce Alexander, however advised motorists to cooperate with traffic management personnel and observe all traffic rules and regulations.
