The National Population Commission (NPC), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has launched a nationwide verbal and social autopsy survey in Yobe State to determine the causes of under-five and maternal deaths.
NPC Federal Commissioner representing Borno and Yobe states, Isa Audu Buratai emphasized that the survey will improve child and maternal healthcare.
Buratai urged community members to cooperate fully by providing accurate information to help the government understand and address the underlying causes of these deaths.
The Commissioner who appealed to traditional and community leaders, the media, and the general public to support the survey’s smooth execution, expressed gratitude for the support of the Yobe State government and relevant ministries.
The study which follows the 2023-2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, concluded in May 2024, aims to generate data to inform the development of effective health policies and interventions to reduce preventable deaths.
Fieldwork commenced on November 4th and will continue until December 15th, with data collectors conducting household interviews to gather information on maternal and child deaths.
