As part of efforts to achieve the long awaited Local Government autonomy, the House of Representatives is to hold National Dialogue on Local Government autonomy next week to delibrate on how to achieve the Local Government autonomy.
The Deputy Speaker House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu who doubles as the chairman House Committee on Constitution Review, made this known during a meeting of the committee in Abuja.
Mr. Kalu explained that the national dialogue is aimed to consolidate ideas for a robust discourse on the independence of local government administration in Nigeria.
“The upcoming National Dialogue on Local Government and Constitution Amendment scheduled to hold on Monday, 2nd December 2024, in Abuja”
“This event is a vital platform to consolidate ideas and strategies for achieving a robust local government framework, which is critical to our constitutional review efforts”
“In addition, other engagements that we will be having include: public engagement on tax reforms as it concerns the constitution amendment and a public engagement with political parties”
On the engagements and hearings on the constitutional review, the Deputy Speaker also announced that the committee would commence zonal public hearing in January, 2025.
According to Mr. Kalu, the hearings will take place in 12 States, representing the six geopolitical zones, which are Gombe and Borno States for the North-East, Nassarawa and Niger States for the North Central, Kaduna and Sokoto States for the North West.
Others are Enugu and Imo States for the South East, Bayelsa and Cross River States for the South South and Lagos and Ondo States for the South West.
The Deputy Speaker emphasized the importance of inclusivity and encouraged committee members to engage with their respective state caucuses, governors, and house of assembly members to ensure the success of the exercise.
