The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, has called on the Federal Government to pay the three months outstanding wage award as a way forward to foster harmonious relationship between government and labour unions.
TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo made the call at the 7th Registrar of Trade Unions Workshop in Abuja.
Represented by Vice President of TUC, Tommy Okon, Comrade Osifo urged the government to prioritize the welfare of workers in the face of economic hardship.
Responding, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammad Dingyadi gave assurance that the federal government would look into the issues of wage awards and implementation of minimum wage raised by the unions.
“We will promote the contributions of the labour sector through professional service delivery of the highest quality and global standards to meet international expectations in line with our mandate as Ministry of Labour to review, implement and enforce all government policies”. The Minister stated.
Dingyadi promised to promote capacity building, strengthening of labour Institutions, consistency in policy implementations, Provision of occupational Safety and Health framework for workers in workplace.
A Director Overseeing the office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, John Nyamali expressed hope that the workshop would find a workable strategy in addressing labour related issues.
