The 61st Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival has officially commenced in Kebbi State, combining cultural celebration with a strong investment drive aimed at attracting local and international partners.
At the official launch in Birnin Kebbi, Deputy Governor Senator Umar Tafida highlighted the festival’s historical significance and its evolution from a local fishing event over 500 years ago into a national and international cultural attraction.

He emphasized the festival’s role as a key tourism asset, platform for cultural diplomacy, and driver of economic growth.
Senator Tafida noted milestones that underscore the festival’s prominence, including its appearance on Nigeria’s N50 banknote, recognition at FESTAC ’77, and its inscription by UNESCO in 2016 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The 2026 edition features an Agricultural and Industrial Trade Fair, motor racing, polo tournaments, archery, water sports, cultural durbars, cultural nights, and horse, camel, and motorcycle races, culminating in the grand fishing competition.

The Deputy Governor declared the festival open, reiterating the commitment of the Federal and state governments to delivering a successful, globally competitive event that showcases Kebbi State’s rich cultural heritage and promotes tourism and economic investment.
