The Ogun State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the ongoing process for the selection of a new Awujale of Ijebuland.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyat Hamzat, in a letter dated January 20, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government.
Following the directive, the Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government has formally instructed the Awujale Kingmakers’ Council to halt the selection process.
The suspension was conveyed in a letter signed by the Secretary to the Local Government Chairman, Oke Adebanjo.
According to the letter, the decision followed the receipt of petitions, security reports and complaints from concerned individuals, including allegations of irregularities and inducement in the selection process.
The local government said the action was taken in line with the provisions of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021, which empowers the government to set aside an appointment in the interest of peace, order and good governance.
The letter stated that the government decided to act proactively to prevent any breakdown of law and order and to protect the integrity of the traditional institution of the Ijebu Kingdom.
The kingmakers have therefore been directed to suspend the Awujale selection process until further notice.
The Ogun State Government says further directives will be issued in due course on the continuation of the exercise.
