The Abia State Government is set to launch the pilot phase of a Biogas Programme aimed at converting waste into clean and renewable energy for residents.
Governor Alex Otti made this known during the first Media Parley of the year, tagged “Governor Otti Speaks,” at the Government House, Umuahia.
He said the project will be launched at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
Governor Otti explained that the Abia State Electricity Regulation Authority has taken over from the National Electricity Regulatory Commission to enable the state regulate its electricity sector and ensure energy independence.

On housing, the Governor announced plans to commence the construction of a Pocket Layout Housing Scheme for civil servants, alongside two additional housing estates in Umuahia to address housing deficits.
In the health sector, he said the government has renovated and equipped 200 Primary Health Care Centres with modern facilities under the first phase of Project Ekwueme to improve access to affordable healthcare.
Governor Otti also stated that ongoing reconstruction projects across educational institutions are aimed at raising standards, noting that public school enrolment has increased significantly from 117,000 to over 300,000 as of December 2025.
He further announced that the free services of the pilot Electric Green Shuttle buses have been extended to the end of February 2026.
