The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has called on Anambra Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, to reconsider the ongoing one-week closure of Onitsha Main Market, which began on January 26.
In a letter to the governor, ACCI President, Chief Emeka Obegolu acknowledged the governor’s efforts to tackle the Monday sit-at-home issue and restore economic activity in the state.
However, Obegolu emphasized the negative impact of the closure on the market, which serves as one of West Africa’s largest commercial hubs.
He highlighted the severe hardship faced by traders, small businesses, and transporters, noting disruptions to inventory flows, increased costs, and ripple effects on national supply chains.
Obegolu proposed a phased reopening of the market, possibly before the end of the one-week closure, tied to commitments from market leaders to ensure full operation on Mondays.
He also urged the state government to support traders with relief measures or access to low-interest credit during this challenging period.
The ACCI expressed readiness to engage in discussions to find a balanced solution that would restore order while maintaining the economic vitality of Onitsha Main Market.
