Nelson Ahamefula Akuma, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, has accused senators of the ruling All Progressives Congress of deliberately creating gaps in the Electoral Act to facilitate manipulation of election results.
At a press conference in Lagos, Akuma said the senators are resisting mandatory electronic transmission of results because it would limit their ability to influence outcomes, particularly in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
He challenged Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s claim that infrastructure and security challenges prevent nationwide electronic transmission, arguing that the ruling administration has failed to invest in critical infrastructure such as electricity.
Akuma stressed that the responsibility for conducting elections lies with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and lawmakers should focus on legal frameworks that ensure transparency, rather than citing network or power issues.
He called for the reintroduction of mandatory electronic transmission of results into the Electoral Act, warning that its removal threatens the credibility and fairness of Nigeria’s electoral process.
According to him, making electronic transmission constitutional is essential to safeguard democracy and restore public confidence in elections.
