The All Progressives Congress and the African Democratic Congress are shaping up for a keen contest ahead of the Federal Capital Territory Area Councils election scheduled for Saturday, February twenty-first, twenty-twenty-six.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed the date for elections into the six Area Councils of the FCT.
Although seventeen political parties have fielded candidates, the contest is widely expected to be dominated by the ruling APC and the opposition ADC.
President Bola Tinubu has expressed confidence that ongoing infrastructural development in the FCT under Minister Nyesom Wike will boost the APC’s electoral fortunes.
The President recently commended the minister for projects across the territory, describing him as “Mr. Infrastructure” and noting improvements in roads, health centres, schools and rural development.
However, political observers say recent political tensions involving the FCT Minister may affect campaign dynamics ahead of the council polls.
Meanwhile, the ADC has stepped up mobilisation efforts with the visit of its chieftain and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
Obi canvassed support for ADC chairmanship candidates in Abuja Municipal Area Council and Bwari Area Council.
During visits to markets, traditional rulers and rural communities, Obi urged residents to support ADC candidates, promising people-centred leadership and improved local infrastructure if elected.
INEC says all arrangements are ongoing to ensure a peaceful and credible Area Councils election across the FCT.
