The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio over his remarks dismissing opposition concerns about the Electoral Act 2026.
Akpabio made the comments during a reception for the wife of the President, Remi Tinubu, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he said complaints from opposition parties show that the National Assembly had done the right thing.
But in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the opposition raises concerns when laws may weaken democratic principles.
The party expressed concern about a provision in the Electoral Act that removes certificate forgery as grounds for challenging election results.
According to the ADC, this may conflict with parts of the Constitution which disqualify anyone who submits forged documents to the Independent National Electoral Commission from holding public office.
The party warned that such provisions could create legal confusion and reduce public confidence in the electoral process.
ADC said it will continue to advocate reforms that strengthen transparency, accountability, and integrity in Nigeria’s democracy.
