The Secretary General of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), Adefunke Adeyemi, has called for stronger investment in women and youth to support the growth of Africa’s aviation sector.
In a message marking the 2026 International Women’s Day, Adeyemi said deliberate policies and initiatives are needed to expand opportunities for women and young professionals across the aviation industry.
She noted that as Africa advances the Single African Air Transport Market and works toward the goals of Agenda 2063, the aviation sector is entering a period of increased integration and expansion that requires stronger human capacity and inclusive leadership.
Adeyemi said AFCAC is already promoting inclusion through its African Women and Youth in Aviation Initiative, which provides training, mentorship, scholarships and professional visibility for women and young professionals in the sector.
According to her, over 150 beneficiaries have already received training and career development support through the programme, alongside partnerships and a digital platform designed to track and grow aviation talent across the continent.
She also announced the launch of the “Give One Thing” campaign for 2026, encouraging individuals, organisations and industry leaders to commit to at least one practical action that supports the advancement of women and youth in aviation.
Adeyemi added that improving inclusion in training, leadership and decision-making would strengthen institutional capacity and ensure sustainable growth in Africa’s aviation industry.
