The pan-Nigerian socio-political group, Afenifere, has urged the federal government to urgently tackle the country’s economic and security challenges, warning that Nigeria could worsen if issues are not addressed.
In a statement signed by Oba Oladipo Olaitan and Prince Justice Faloye during their monthly meeting in Ilesha, Osun State, the group expressed concern over reports showing Nigeria’s poverty rate could rise from 38% in 2023 to 62% in 2026.
They criticised the unresolved 2025 Tax Reform, noting it could further impoverish citizens.
Afenifere welcomed recent U.S.-Nigeria joint security operations but criticised past political interference that weakened similar efforts.
The group called for restructuring the federation, the introduction of state police, and condemned negotiations with terrorist groups, describing such actions as dangerous.
With the 2027 elections approaching, Afenifere urged political actors to prioritise citizens’ interests and called on INEC to ensure a free and fair electoral process.
Attending the meeting were prominent leaders including Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, Olusola Ebiseni, and Chief Pekun Awobona.
