Presidential Candidate of the Young Progressives Party, YPP, Mr. Peter Agada, has questioned the effectiveness of the Federal Government’s 90-day action plan to address the rising cost of living.
Agada, in a telephone interview with newsmen, said the government needed to focus more on practical measures that would directly improve the lives of Nigerians.
He proposed the #LabourDirect ward-to-ward development strategy as an alternative approach to stimulating economic activities and creating jobs at the grassroots.
According to him, the strategy could be implemented within 60 days and would focus on employment, production and development projects across communities.
Agada said the government could also adopt the Labour Direct Information Network, LIN, to monitor projects, jobs, production, revenue and other economic activities through a central system.
He explained that such a system would make it easier to track the progress and impact of government interventions across the country.
The YPP candidate also questioned the impact of previous measures introduced by the Federal Government to reduce the cost of living and support businesses and farmers.
He cited interventions announced since 2023 for manufacturers, small businesses, farmers, food production and the Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, initiative.
Agada said government policies should be assessed based on their impact on food prices, employment, production and household incomes.
He also expressed concern about the timing of the latest 90-day plan, considering the approach of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, Nigerians should be able to measure the success of the programme through clear targets and regular updates.
He therefore called for a dashboard showing the number of jobs created, businesses supported, production increased and revenue generated under the programme.
Agada said transparent monitoring would help Nigerians determine whether the 90-day intervention was achieving its intended objectives.
He maintained that economic policies should go beyond announcements and produce measurable improvements in the lives of citizens.
