The Anambra State Police Command has announced the re-closure of the Onitsha Main Market in compliance with a directive from the state government.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga, the directive was approved by the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.
Mr. Ikenga said that adequate security has been deployed in and around the Onitsha Main Market, as well as other strategic locations within the city, by the police in collaboration with other security agencies to maintain law and order and prevent any breach of public peace.
He explained that traders seen gathered around the market in a viral video were addressed and sensitized on the need to fully comply with government directives in the interest of public safety, security, and economic stability.
The Police Command assured residents that the situation in Onitsha and across the state remains calm and under control, adding that it will continue to monitor developments to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
