Over Fifteen million naira, N15m, worth prizes are to be won as Anambra Sports Solution Initiative, ANSSI, is set to kick off across the 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission, ANSSDC, Patrick Onyedum, stated this at a news ference in Awka.
Onyedum noted that the event offers opportunity to develop sports from the grassroots in line with governor Chukwuma Soludo’s agenda.
“About 15,000 participants, including males and females from private, missionary and publicly owned primary and post primary schools featuring at various age categories such as U-12, U-14 and U-18 during the competition” he stressed.
According to him, within two years of establishing the School sports, the State is now the cynosure of all eyes as athletes have performed creditably in National and International competitions.
There would be eleven sporting activities, which include athletics, ncho, basketball, chess, cricket, taekwondo, football and others, in the third edition and runs in collaboration with Anambra State Ministry of Education as well as the 21 local government Chairmen across the state.
Onyedum said for the state to maintain the tempo, sports equipment like tennis boards, basketball courts among others were needed in schools to encourage them to embrace sports.
The Commissioner for Education, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh said they would mobilise material and other resources towards ensuring that the programme was successful.
She noted that sports in schools is a vital part of every child’s development which generally keeps the human body active.
The Chairman of Anaocha local government area, Mr Rommanus Ibekwe, while speaking on behalf of the twenty one Local government Chairmen, noted that they had agreed to participate in the exercise in order to promote grassroots sports which is cardinal to the present administration.
