The Anambra State Government has announced plans to begin a phased remodelling of the Onitsha Main Market as part of efforts to modernise and reposition the facility.
The decision was reached during an interactive meeting between Governor Chukwuma Soludo and key stakeholders, including leaders of the Onitsha Main Market and representatives of neighbouring markets in Awka.

Governor Soludo said the remodelling is aimed at revitalising the market in recognition of its critical role in the state’s economy.
He noted that leadership sometimes requires taking difficult but necessary decisions to secure a better future.
The Governor outlined plans to reclaim market parks, create properly planned walkways for easy movement, provide public conveniences, and improve the overall appearance of the market through repainting and colour-coding of shops.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building organised and sustainable markets that will benefit traders and host communities.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Onitsha Main Market, Mr. Chijioke Okpalugo, said traders had agreed to the remodelling plan after due consultation.
He, however, appealed for additional time to enable traders remove goods from areas affected by illegal structures to ensure a smooth transition.
Governor Soludo assured that the market will reopen on Monday after observing the stipulated closure period.
