The Nigerian Army has dislodged oil thieves from the Adibawa oil well area and concluded plans to permanently deploy troops to prevent the return of illegal refining and crude oil theft.
The Acting Garrison Commander of 16 Brigade, Major Hassan Mohammed, stated this during a media tour organised by Defence Media Operations in collaboration with Operation DELTA SAFE.
He said the area, once notorious for illegal refining, has been secured through sustained patrols and anti-bunkering operations, forcing criminals to abandon the location.
Major Mohammed explained that the swampy terrain poses operational challenges, especially during the rainy season, but assured that troops have continued to dominate the area.
He said the Army is working with Reconizer Oil Company to establish a permanent base at the oil wellhead, including accommodation for troops, to ensure round-the-year security.
The planned deployment will include land and water patrols, gunboats, a houseboat and surveillance drones to monitor the forest and waterways.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said the operation reflects the military’s commitment to protecting critical national assets.
He explained that Nigeria’s oil production has risen to about 2.2 million barrels per day and urged host communities to cooperate with security agencies to sustain the gains.
The Adibawa oil wellhead, located on the Rivers–Bayelsa boundary, is considered one of the largest in the region.
The Armed Forces say they will continue to secure oil facilities nationwide to boost production and support economic development.
