Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appealed for unity within the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress, ADC, following rising tensions between his supporters and those of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, over the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.
The call comes amid growing disagreements on social media, especially on X, formerly Twitter, since Peter Obi joined the ADC in December after leaving the Labour Party.
Atiku warned that internal attacks and verbal exchanges among supporters of both leaders only weaken the opposition and give advantage to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
In a statement, Atiku said anyone who insults either him or Peter Obi does not mean well for the coalition or for Nigeria, stressing that the opposition must remain united to achieve its goal of political change.
He noted that division within the party could undermine efforts to build a strong alternative platform capable of addressing the country’s economic challenges.
Meanwhile, leaders of the ADC have also expressed concern over the growing tension, urging members to avoid infighting and focus on strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Both Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are widely believed to be interested in contesting for the ADC presidential ticket, a development that has intensified political calculations within the coalition.
The party leadership, however, says its priority remains building a credible and united opposition platform for Nigerians.
