Six governorship aspirants from the Kunav bloc of Vandeikya Local Government Area in Benue state have declared their opposition to Governor Hyacinth Alia’s possible second-term bid in 2027.
At a joint press conference in Makurdi titled “Benue at 50: Reflection, Responsibility and the Future We Must Reclaim,” the aspirants expressed concerns over what they described as governance and security challenges in the state.
The group comprising Professor Dennis Ityavyar, Hon. Joseph Waya, Professor Paul Angya, Professor Terhemba Shija, Rt. Hon. Dominic Terkaa Ucha and ESV Godwin Ityoachimin cited recurring attacks in several local government areas, irregular salary payments, infrastructure deficits and low internally generated revenue as key issues requiring urgent attention.
They argued that despite allocations from the Federation Account and internally generated revenue, public institutions remain underfunded, while insecurity continues to displace communities across parts of the state.
The aspirants referenced recent attacks in Kwande and other local government areas as evidence of growing security concerns, calling for more proactive leadership and inclusive governance.
Reacting to the claims, Governor Alia’s spokesperson, Tersoo Kula, described the allegations as politically motivated.
He maintained that the administration has introduced reforms in public finance management, civil service operations, infrastructure development and security coordination.
Kula added that the government has taken steps to block revenue leakages, address payroll irregularities and invest in agriculture, education and community-based security initiatives.
The exchange highlights emerging political debates in Benue State as stakeholders position ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
