The Borno State Police Command has ordered a full-scale investigation into the death of a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Abdul Hadi, following public concerns over the incident.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the Command explained that the matter stemmed from an operation carried out on February 4, 2026, when a joint patrol team intercepted a suspect in Kaleri area of Maiduguri.
During the operation, Abdul Hadi allegedly fired at a patrol vehicle and later fled the scene.
Police said the vigilante member subsequently reported himself to the Rapid Response Squad–Social Vices Unit on February 6 after coordination with VGN leadership. He was detained and remanded at the Tandari Custodial Centre.
According to the statement, Abdul Hadi developed sudden health complications on February 9 while in custody and was rushed to a medical facility, where he was confirmed dead.
The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has directed a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including a review of the conduct of officers on duty at the custodial facility.
The Command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, assuring that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action.
The Police also urged residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information, reaffirming their commitment to accountability, due process, and public safety in the state.
