Over 70 Civil Society Organisations have raised concerns over plans to route the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway through Stubb’s Creek Forest Reserve in Akwa Ibom State.
The groups warned that the alignment could cause irreversible deforestation, biodiversity loss, flooding, and disruption of local livelihoods, while undermining climate resilience and investor confidence in the Niger Delta.
Speakers at a press briefing in Abuja urged the Federal Ministry of Works and the Akwa Ibom State Government to reroute the highway, complete comprehensive environmental and social impact assessments, and protect the reserve.
The coalition stressed that safeguarding Stubb’s Creek is essential for long-term economic stability, climate protection, and sustainable infrastructure development in the region.
