The Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau has commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Delta State Command, for intercepting two buses loaded with illicit drugs along the Asaba–Onitsha Expressway.
In a statement issued in Asaba, the Director-General of the Bureau, Mr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, described the operation as a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking.
He noted that the seizure has dealt a significant blow to criminal networks that use the busy corridor to transport narcotics across the country.
Mr. Oghenesivbe reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the Drug-Free Delta campaign, in collaboration with the NDLEA, and urged the agency to ensure diligent prosecution of the suspects arrested in connection with the seizure.
He disclosed that recovered exhibits include over four hundred and ten thousand tramadol pills, eighty-four litres of codeine syrup, over eighty-two thousand tablets of diazepam, nine hundred tablets of swinol, and sixty-five pills of molly, with an estimated street value of about three hundred million naira.
The Delta State Government also commended the NDLEA State Commander, Mr. Halilu Hamidu, and his team, calling for intensified intelligence-led operations to curb drug trafficking and illegal drug retailing.
Mr. Oghenesivbe noted that drug abuse fuels crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, rape, and other social vices, stressing that the fight against drug abuse requires collective responsibility, strong parenting, and the promotion of positive moral values.
