Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, says the United States may take a stronger interest in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections due to its strategic concerns about stability in Africa.
Speaking on Inside Sources on Channels Television, Dogara said Nigeria’s political and economic importance makes it a key country in the evolving global order.
According to him, major global powers are increasingly driven by national interest, especially as traditional international norms continue to weaken.
He noted that Nigeria’s stability has far-reaching implications for the African continent, suggesting that the U.S. and other countries may not remain indifferent to developments in the country’s democratic process.
Dogara, however, stressed that Nigeria must be deliberate in protecting its sovereignty and positioning itself strategically in global affairs to avoid having its future shaped by external forces.
On reports of the Federal Government engaging a U.S.-based lobby group, Dogara said lobbying is a common international practice but expressed concern over the reported cost, describing nine million dollars as high if confirmed.
He added that such engagements must be transparent and proportionate.
The former Speaker maintained that Nigeria’s foreign policy and democratic stability must be handled with caution, especially as the 2027 elections approach.
