The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has criticised the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) over its interim report alleging airfare manipulation by domestic carriers during the 2025 yuletide period.
Obiorah Okonkwo, AON spokesperson and Chairman of United Nigeria Airline, described the FCCPC’s findings as “detrimental to the survival of local airlines” and said the commission lacks the technical expertise to assess airline pricing mechanisms.
He argued that the report reflects a misunderstanding of airline operations and is aimed more at public perception than facts.
According to the interim FCCPC report released on February 26, some domestic carriers increased ticket prices by over 131 per cent on routes to the South-East and South-South during peak travel periods.
Tunji Bello, FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, defended the commission’s actions, stressing that the review is part of its statutory mandate to promote competitive markets and protect consumers.
He noted that further structural and route-level analysis is ongoing, and no final conclusions will be drawn until all data is reviewed.
Bello added that the interim report is meant to clarify pricing behaviour and that any future regulatory or enforcement measures would be based strictly on verified facts and legal provisions.
This exchange highlights growing tension between regulatory oversight and operational realities in Nigeria’s aviation sector, especially during peak travel periods.
