Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has clarified that his reported rift with President Bola Tinubu is based on differences in governance philosophy rather than personal issues.
Speaking on Trust TV, El-Rufai said he never had a close personal relationship with President Tinubu, unlike his relationship with former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to him, his support for Tinubu’s presidential ambition was guided by political principles and party considerations.
He explained that after eight years of President Buhari from the North, there was an understanding within the All Progressives Congress (APC) that power would return to the South.
El-Rufai said once Tinubu emerged as the party’s candidate, he committed himself to working for the party’s victory, regardless of personal preferences.
He, however, stated that his disagreements with the President stem from differing views on governance and public service.
El-Rufai maintained that his approach to public office is focused on service delivery and results, while suggesting that he does not share the current administration’s governing philosophy.
The former governor also said that although he was publicly offered a ministerial position, he believes he would have eventually stepped down due to the differences in outlook.
El-Rufai’s comments come amid ongoing political discussions aheadf the 2027 general election
