Communities in Engenni Kingdom, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, have raised fresh concerns over an alleged gas leak from an underwater pipeline on the Orashi River.
Residents of Oshie, Akinima and neighbouring communities say the pipeline, reportedly operated by Oando Nigeria PLC, has been leaking gas for over a year, with bubbles still visible on the river surface.
The affected communities claim the situation has disrupted their sources of livelihood, particularly fishing and domestic water use, while exposing residents to health risks.
They are calling on relevant authorities to urgently intervene.
Paramount Ruler of Oshie Community, Chief Patrick Miller, said the people are facing hardship due to environmental pollution allegedly caused by the leak.
Youth leaders from Oshie, Akinima and the Engenni Youth Assembly also expressed concern over the impact on the wellbeing of residents.
Some women in the area say children and adults now fall ill frequently after using water from the river, which serves as a primary source of sustenance for many families.
The Environmental Defenders Network has urged Oando Nigeria PLC to take immediate steps to address the situation.

The group also called on the Rivers State and Federal Ministries of Environment to investigate the matter, ensure environmental safety and provide potable water to affected communities.
Efforts to get official response from the company were not immediately available at the time of this report.
