The Federal Character Commission, FCC, has reiterated that sports administration in Nigeria must fully align with constitutional provisions on equity, inclusiveness, and national balance.
Executive Chairman of the Commission, Mrs. Hulayat Ayo Omidiran, stated this during a courtesy visit by the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and members of his board at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Mrs. Omidiran emphasized that the FCC’s mandate to monitor compliance with federal character principles across more than 700 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies extends to institutions connected with sports governance.
She stressed that appointments, recruitment processes, and representation within football administration must reflect fairness, transparency, and Nigeria’s diverse composition.
According to her, strengthening institutional collaboration between regulatory bodies and sporting organizations is necessary to entrench accountability and prevent imbalance in leadership structures.
She noted that football, beyond entertainment, remains a strategic sector capable of promoting national cohesion when properly governed under clear policy guidelines.
Responding, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau acknowledged the oversight role of the Commission and expressed readiness to deepen cooperation to ensure balanced development across football structures nationwide.
He said adherence to regulatory standards would enhance credibility and strengthen public confidence in sports administration.
The engagement signals a broader move to integrate governance policy frameworks into the management of Nigeria’s sports sector, reinforcing the principle that national unity and equal opportunity must remain central to all public institutions.
