The Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NiMet, says some states in the country will experience extreme heat in the next four days following a rise in ambient temperatures.
This is contained in a statement by the Agency in Abuja.
According to the statement, the states are Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
“The public is advised of an increased likelihood of thermal discomfort over the next three to four days due to a rise in ambient temperatures, both during the day and at night, along with elevated atmospheric moisture levels”
It states that other Vulnerable areas are parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto states.
It advises Nigerians to avoid exposure to excessive heat, Fatigue and irritability, Reduced cognitive function and motor skills as well as reduce productivity
The statement also urges Nigerians to use cooling devices such as fans and air conditioners to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, wear lightweight, breathable fabrics that allow proper air circulation.
It also advises citizens to Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, Minimize time spent outdoors, especially under direct sunlight, seek shaded areas and take regular breaks if working outside.
“Avoid Peak Sun Hours: Refrain from prolonged exposure to the sun between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM, when temperatures are at their highest. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or cap and sunglasses to shield the face and eyes from direct sunlight” the statement adds.
