Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti has described the posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award given to his father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, as a recognition of an artist who lived and created by his own rules.
Speaking to ARISE News in Los Angeles, Femi said the honour validates Fela’s independent spirit and lasting influence on global music, noting that the pioneer Afrobeat musician remained true to his vision despite not embracing mainstream culture.
Femi highlighted that Fela’s music inspired generations of artists worldwide, including Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and stressed the significance of him being the first African musician to receive the award.
His sister, Yeni Kuti, described the recognition as a statement for Africa, encouraging young creatives to build lasting legacies and respect cultural pioneers.
The family emphasized that the Grammy is not just a trophy, but a confirmation of Fela’s enduring impact as a musical, political, and cultural force across generations.
