The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to the timely completion of the Otukpo Multipurpose Dam in Benue State, as part of efforts to strengthen water security, irrigation and renewable energy development.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, gave the assurance during an inspection of the project at Otobi Akpa in Otukpo Local Government Area.

Professor Utsev said the inspection was in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to assess water, sanitation and irrigation infrastructure nationwide, with a view to addressing gaps in water supply and improving the living conditions of Nigerians.
He explained that the tour focuses on identifying incomplete dams, facilities facing technical challenges and projects requiring urgent intervention to ensure sustainability and safety.

According to the Minister, the Otukpo Multipurpose Dam, when completed, will have a reservoir capacity of about 130 million cubic metres, generate 3.3 megawatts of hydroelectric power, supply potable water, irrigate about 2,000 hectares of farmland and create access roads within the project area.
He noted that technical assessments have shown that completing the dam remains the most viable long-term solution to water challenges in parts of Benue State, adding that the benefits will extend beyond Otukpo to neighbouring zones.

The Minister assured residents that the Federal Government would address all outstanding issues affecting the project, including security concerns, to ensure its timely completion.
During the visit, community leaders welcomed the initiative but appealed for improved security in the area to safeguard lives, property and critical infrastructure.
