The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged members of the National Assembly of Nigeria to approach lawmaking with a strong sense of moral and spiritual responsibility, reminding them that they are accountable not only to citizens but also to God.
She gave the charge at the dedication and inauguration of the National Assembly Chapel, built by the National Assembly Christian Legislators Fellowship, describing the edifice as both a place of worship and a symbol of ethical reflection within the legislature.
The First Lady recalled that during her 12-year tenure in the Senate, Christian lawmakers met in committee rooms for fellowship due to the absence of a dedicated worship centre in the complex.
According to Senator Tinubu, the Chapel serves as a solemn reminder that while lawmakers exercise constitutional authority on behalf of over 200 million Nigerians, their actions and decisions carry spiritual consequences beyond their official mandates.
In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the inauguration as a spiritual milestone for Nigeria’s democracy, stressing that governance should be guided by conscience and divine wisdom.
He noted that laws must reflect justice to earn both obedience and moral reverence.
Also speaking, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, said the Chapel underscores the belief that lawmakers operate under a higher moral authority.
He added that the Christian Legislators Fellowship has consistently served as a moral compass within the legislature, especially during periods of intense political debate.
