The Federal Government has flagged off a Drainage and Erosion Control Project in Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The project, executed through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation under the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, is aimed at tackling flooding and erosion in the area.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, said the intervention will address decades of erosion and flood challenges that have destroyed farmlands and threatened lives and property in the community.
He explained that beyond controlling floods, the project will harness water for irrigation to support year-round farming, boost food production, and improve livelihoods, in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Minister urged residents to take ownership of the project and ensure its sustainability.
Representing the Jigawa State Governor, Deputy Governor Aminu Usman Gumel commended the Federal Government for the initiative, noting that it would help curb perennial flooding and strengthen the local economy.
He added that youths in the area are being trained in drip irrigation as part of the project.
Managing Director of the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, described the project as a step towards modern irrigation development and called on the community to protect the facility.
Highlights of the event included the graduation of youths trained in drip irrigation.
