French authorities have arrested a woman in her fifties after the bodies of two newborn babies were discovered in a freezer at a residence in Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont, eastern France.
According to AFP, the discovery was made on February 10 after a man alerted police upon finding the body of a newborn in his home freezer.
The woman, believed to be the mother of the infants, reportedly left the residence without notice shortly before the alert was raised.
She was apprehended the following day in Boulogne-Billancourt, a suburb of western Paris, and is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
The suspect is said to be the mother of nine children from two relationships.
Local authorities have sealed off the property while forensic examinations are ongoing.
Mayor Jean-Claude Tramesel expressed shock over the incident, describing the development as deeply unsettling for the small community of about 1,500 residents.
The case adds to a number of similar incidents recorded in France in recent years, with previous convictions secured in related cases.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths. – AFP
