The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Anambra State Command has urged media organisations to work closely with the corps to enlighten the public on best road safety practices.
The Sector Commander of FRSC in Anambra State, Corps Commander Joyce Alexander, gave the advice during a one day capacity training organized for media houses at the NUJ Press Centre, Awka.
Mrs Alexander who commended the media for its balanced and prompt reportage of FRSC activities, pledged to strengthen relations with media outfits for effective sensitisation.
The FRSC boss who lamented the high rate of speed limit violations among others in the area, urged motorists to visit the FRSC Licensing Centres to acquire their licenses.
Delivering a paper on major causes of road crashes in Nigeria, the Deputy Corps Commander Training, FRSC, Anambra State Command, Mrs Caroline Olise identified human errors as the leading causes of road crashes worldwide.
She emphasized that road safety should receive the same global attention as health issues, adding that new strategies were needed to address the crashes.
Mrs Olise suggested that motorists, particularly commercial drivers, should adopt practices similar to those used by pilots, which would help foster a sense of responsibility and trust between drivers and passengers.
She further stressed the importance of value reorientation and promised that they would focus on helping motorists to change driving habits for the benefit of all.
In his remarks, the Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, Doctor Emeka Odogwu, commended FRSC for its relentless sensitisation of Nigerians on the virtues of safe driving.
Some media heads interviewed promised to fulfill their mandate for efficient delivery of accurate, reliable, comprehensive and balanced reportage of events.
