The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, says 10,446 road traffic crashes were recorded nationwide in 2025, representing over nine percent increase compared to 2024 figures.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, made this known in Abuja while briefing newsmen during the 2025 Ember Months Campaign.
Despite the rise in crashes, the Corps reported a reduction in fatalities, with deaths dropping from 5,421 in 2024 to 5,289 in 2025, indicating a 2.4 percent decline.
The Corps Marshal attributed the decrease to improved rescue operations, enhanced enforcement and stricter compliance with traffic regulations.
He explained that intensified enforcement efforts in 2025 also led to an increase in the number of traffic offenders apprehended.
According to him, the Kaduna–Zaria–Kano–Katsina, Abuja–Zuba–Lokoja and Jos–Bauchi–Gombe corridors recorded the highest number of crashes, largely due to heavy traffic volume and unsafe driving practices, particularly among commercial drivers.
Mallam Mohammed said all Commands have been directed to establish Crash Intelligence Desks and deploy additional personnel to high-risk corridors.
He added that the Corps will focus on addressing the “Big Five” offences—speeding, dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, wrong-way driving and overloading—which account for over 70 percent of fatal crashes.
The FRSC will also intensify behavioural-change communication campaigns targeting specific road user groups, including commercial drivers, private motorists and fleet operators.
The Corps Marshal called on religious, community and opinion leaders to support grassroots sensitization efforts and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for sustained policy and institutional support to the Corps.
He urged motorists and stakeholders in the transport sector to obey traffic rules and cooperate with the FRSC to enhance road safety nationwide.
