The Gombe State Government has inaugurated a Sexual Assault Referral Centre at the Gombe State Specialist Hospital to provide medical, psychological, and legal support for survivors of sexual violence.
The initiative, supported by UNICEF, was commissioned on Friday by the Deputy Governor and UNICEF officials.
Dr. Sambo Dawa, Chief Medical Director of the hospital, said the centre is equipped with treatment rooms, counselling units, and legal desks, offering a one-stop facility for victims.
He explained that 170 cases of sexual violence were reported in the state last year, mostly from rural areas.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, assured that rehabilitation for survivors would also be prioritised.
Traditional leaders, including the Emir of Gombe, have commended the centre and urged victims to speak out.
UNICEF’s Nuzhat Rafique called for intensified community sensitisation and stronger support from law enforcement to prevent recurrence.
