Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State is engaging party stakeholders to assess his political future amid ongoing legal disputes affecting the Peoples Democratic Party at the national level.
Lawal, who won the 2023 governorship election on the PDP platform in a notable upset against former governor Bello Matawalle of the APC, has been consulting stakeholders across the state’s 14 local government areas.
His aides clarified that no final decision has been made on whether he will remain with the PDP or explore other political platforms.
The consultations are linked to pending Court of Appeal cases regarding the PDP national convention in Ibadan and the leadership of Tanimu Turaki.
Officials noted that a favorable court ruling could resolve the uncertainty, but in the absence of a timely judgment, the governor may consider alternative parties, including ADC, Labour Party, or SDP, to secure a viable ticket for the 2027 governorship election.
Lawal’s team emphasised that there has been no formal indication of a move to the APC and that the governor remains committed to maintaining dialogue within the PDP.
Analysts observe that the outcome of the PDP’s national leadership dispute will significantly influence party cohesion and electoral strategy in Zamfara ahead of the 2027 polls.
