The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has detained former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Bashir Jamoh.
Sources say Jamoh, who headed the agency from 2020 to 2023, was taken into custody after allegedly failing to honour several invitations by the commission over petitions filed against him.
He is reportedly being investigated for alleged abuse of office, including claims of conferring undue advantage on himself through fraudulent procurement processes.
When contacted, ICPC spokesperson, John Odey, confirmed the arrest but declined to provide further details, saying more information would be made available later.
NIMASA is the federal agency responsible for regulating and promoting maritime activities in Nigeria, including maritime safety, security, environmental protection and enforcement of shipping laws.
Meanwhile, in 2021, Jamoh had petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to investigate allegations of a N1.5 trillion fraud levelled against him.
He denied the claims and requested a thorough probe to clear his name.
Further developments are expected as investigations continue.
