The National Executive Council of the Labour Party has reaffirmed the national officers elected at its March 27, 2024 Convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State.
This reaffirmation follows recent Supreme Court pronouncements stating that party leadership matters are internal affairs and not subject to judicial intervention.
At a joint briefing attended by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, the National Chairman, Comrade Julius Abure, and the National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, announced the resolutions reached at the NEC meeting in Abuja.

According to them, NEC reviewed the controversies and litigations that trailed the 2024 Convention and concluded that all officers elected in Nnewi—including the National Chairman, his deputies, zonal vice chairmen, the National Secretary, and other principal officials—remain validly in office.
NEC also filled three vacant positions in the National Working Committee which includes Oluwafemi Abayomi Arabambi as National Vice Chairman (South West), Prince Favour Reuben as Assistant National Organizing Secretary and Enu Kikawa as Assistant National Woman Leader (South South).
In addition, NEC authorized the National Chairman and National Secretary to convene a Special Convention when necessary.
It also approved the conduct of ward, local government, and state congresses across the federation.
Earlier, the former Vice-Presidential Candidate of the party, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, reaffirmed that Peter Obi remains a member of the Labour Party and noted that the party continues to grow despite internal challenges.

He added that INEC’s presence at the meeting underscores the party’s commitment to due process.
Dr. Baba-Ahmed called for reconciliation within the party and urged members to unite ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He attributed Nigeria’s worsening insecurity—including school abductions and attacks on military officers to what he described as a diverted electoral mandate, insisting such incidents would not have occurred under a Labour Party government.
He restated the party’s priority of securing the nation and improving workers’ welfare through realistic living wages, linking the current insecurity to poor earnings across professions.
Dr. Baba-Ahmed urged Nigerians to work together for peace and national progress.

The NEC meeting was attended by chairmen and secretaries from all 36 states and the FCT, as well as INEC representatives who monitored the process, party members, and other stakeholders in electoral matters.
