The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has commended residents of Anambra State for observing Monday’s sit-at-home, describing it as a peaceful act of solidarity.
In a statement issued on Monday by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, the group said the people of Anambra had “spoken” by complying with the directive, despite warnings by the state government.
The sit-at-home led to low commercial activity across parts of the state, prompting the Anambra State Government to order the closure of Onitsha Main Market for one week, with indications that the measure could be extended if traders fail to resume operations.
IPOB criticised Governor Chukwuma Soludo over the decision, warning against what it described as intimidation of traders and residents.
The group urged traders to reopen their shops from Tuesday and called on the governor to focus on advocating for the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The group described the sit-at-home as a form of civil protest and appealed to residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding, while restating its demand for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Government has not issued a fresh response to the IPOB statement as of the time of this report.
